Local MLA Lisa Beare welcomes new homes on the way for Indigenous peoples in Pitt Meadows

PITT MEADOWS – New Democrat MLA Lisa Beare is welcoming new, much needed affordable homes for Indigenous peoples in Pitt Meadows.

The B.C. government has selected Katzie First Nation Housing Society to receive $7.8 million in capital funding to help build a new Indigenous housing project in the community.

“BC is the first province in Canada to recognize that there needs to be funds for on-reserve housing projects,” said MLA Beare. “Indigenous people have struggled to find quality, affordable housing in their communities. I’m glad our New Democrat government is making this historic investment.”

These new homes are part of the first series of housing projects selected through the Building BC: Indigenous Housing Fund, a 10 year, $550 million commitment to build 1,750 new units of affordable housing for Indigenous peoples.

The project is in the early stages. BC Housing will work with Katzie First Nation Housing Society to finalize the project over the next few months.
